Introduction to FIDIC

According Contracts and Law Surveys done by many institutes indicates that, people who participated in international projects found it challenging to use contract forms that they were not familiar with. Hence, FIDIC contracts that has acumilated experioces from many engineers, which are known to be the leading contracts used in international engineering and construction projects

FIDIC is an acronym for the French phrase "Fédération Internationale Des Ingénieurs-Conseils", which translates to "the international federation of consulting engineers". FIDIC was founded in 1913 by France, Belgium, and Switzerland, with the United Kingdom joining in 1949. FIDIC's headquarters is located in Switzerland, and it currently has members from over 60 different countries.

FIDIC is well-known for producing standard form contracts for the construction and engineering industry. FIDIC published its first contract in 1957, which was aimed at the civil engineering sector and became known as "The Red Book" because of the color of its cover. FIDIC's contracts are often known by the color of their cover.

FIDIC has made a concerted effort to consult with various industry associations and gain acceptance for its contract forms. Its contracts have been ratified by various international organizations, such as the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors Association, Associated General Contractors of America, and the Inter-American Federation of the Construction Industry, among others. Due to this broad support, FIDIC contracts have become the most widely used contracts in international construction.
